The Volkswagen Passat has a long and storied history that dates back to the automaker’s decision to release the Dasher in the U.S. in 1974. Save for the change of name, some safety add-ons and emission-reducing components, the Dasher was essentially the same as the rest of the world’s Passat. The Quantum replaced the Dasher in 1982, then the Passat finally arrived in the U.S. in 1990.
Heading toward 2015, the highly anticipated, eighth-generation – sixth generation in the U.S. – Volkswagen Passat, which rides on the new MQB platform, has been already launched in Europe, although it won’t reach the U.S. market until 2016. Redesigned inside and out, the new Passat was dressed in a more stylish suit and fitted with a host of brand-new convenience and safety features.
Much like the previous iteration, the 2015 Passat becomes available with a bevy of gasoline and diesel engines. For the very first time, the mid-size vehicle has gained a plug-in hybrid version powered by a gas unit and an electric motor combo. Naturally, the redesigned Passat will endure a few changes before it reaches North American shores, but the Euro-spec model is a very good preview of what we’ll be getting in showrooms for the 2016 model year.

Times have changed in America, that much we can tell you.
Remember the day when mid-sized convertibles were as trendy as the mullet hairstyle? Those days are long gone, which is why it’s a little surprising that automakers are still producing these vehicles.
Consumers still love convertibles, but these days, it has to be of the sporty variety. The 2013 Chrysler 200 Convertible is not a sports car, but it does come with the capability of being a convertible. So you can say that the vehicle offers the best of both worlds, right? The sporty performance of a coupe and the open-air freedom of a convertible all wrapped in a midsized vehicle’s body.
To be fair, there are a number of positive attributes with the 200 Convertible. It’s been completely refreshed to make Chrysler forget about the forsaken Sebring. It also has an impressive powertrain configuration that does justice to its looks.
So there’s still hope for the 200 Convertible. But hope is fleeting, especially in the auto industry and ultimately, the midsized convertible is a dying breed.
Chrysler may have something with the 200 Convertible but for the most part, it’s going to take a lot of convincing to get people interested in this kind of car these days.

The Honda Crosstour suffers from a little bit of an identity crisis. Is it a wagon or is it a crossover? Honda classifies it as the latter, though, so that’s good enough for us.
In some ways, the Crosstour has the qualities of both car types yet it still behooves us to watch Honda peddle the vehicle when it already has a full lineup of models that customers to choose from.
But hey, give credit to the Japanese carmaker for venturing into the road less travelled. The Crosstour really is on a unique platform and to be fair to it, the vehicle does have some impressive qualities about it that should make for an intriguing purchase, even if you have to compromise on some things to make way for other things.
It’s confusing, we know, but then again, isn’t that the state of mind the Crosstour will leave you in?

Back in August 2012, Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid established an impressive speed record of 185.394 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Just a couple of short months later, the vehicle returned to the scene of the victory to break its own record, and succeeded in doing so! The car averaged 186.313 mph over two runs during the SCTA’s World Finals event, eclipsing the previous record by 18.8 mph. Even more impressive is that, during the first round, it hit a top speed of 187.147 mph.
For those who do not remember, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid combines a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline generating 150 HP and 184 lb/ft of torque with an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery that produces an additional 27 HP. The battery consists of 60 individual cells with a combined energy capacity of 5 Ah.
“We’re very proud that the Jetta Hybrid has not only posted the fastest speed for a hybrid at Bonneville, but that it has gone out and broken an SCTA land speed record as well,” said Jonathan Browning, CEO and President, Volkswagen Group of America. “Achieving this record at Bonneville shows that the all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid is a distinctly different offering in the compact hybrid class, offering excellent fuel economy while retaining the fun-to-drive nature expected from a Volkswagen.”
