The Jaguar F-Type

Jaguar F-Type

Jaguar has confirmed that their new sports car will be called the F-TYPE, which naturally follows on from the iconic C-TYPE, D-TYPE and E-TYPE line-up.

The Jaguar F-TYPE is based on the C-X16 concept car shown to the public in September 2011 and will enter production later this year – with the first cars being delivered in mid 2013.

It will be built at Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich plant, where the engineering prototypes have been built and are undergoing finial road-testing and evaluation.

The all-aluminium Jaguar F-TYPE will be launched as a convertible, and a strict two-seater with the focus uncompromisingly on delivering driver reward. A range of petrol engines will be available – including a new engine line-up.

We will of course bring you a full assessment of the Jaguar F-TYPE which we expected to have a price of around 50,000, when we know more details later in the year – Jaguar’s future looks very promising especially with the introduction the XF Sportbrake.

This car is one of our first views of the F-type V8, equipped with the same 5.0-litre lump you’ll find in an XF, XJ or XK. Note the quad pipes, a pair of exhausts nestling on either side of the rear valance with a deep recessed diffuser effect gap in the middle.

The twin-exhaust F-types, as revealed publicly by Jaguar in their own ‘studio spyshots’, with a centre-exit layout is the new 3.0-litre V6.

The F-type roadster arrives first in spring/summer 2013, followed by an F-type coupe roughly a year later.

It’s a new kind of Jaguar sports car to slot between the Porsche Cayman/Boxster duo and the 911, according to Jaguar. Cue a 55,000 estimated price point and the choice of a new 3.0-litre V6 in 340 or 375bhp tune, or a 5.0-litre V8 (no power outputs have been announced yet).

2013 Chevrolet Trax first official picture

2013 Chevrolet Trax

Chevrolet will make a breakthrough at the Paris Motor Show to introduce their new vehicle, 2013 Chevrolet Trax.

The machine has not officially announced, but under the hood of the 2013 Chevrolet Trax planned to be powered by a 1.6-liter petrol is capable of producing power output of 113 HP, a turbocharged 1.4-liter petrol is capable of producing power output of 138 HP and 1.7-liter CDTI diesel that can generate power output of 128 HP.

Although only revealed in patent filings, Chevrolet Trax has an appearance not unlike Encore Buick and Opel / Vauxhall Mokka. That means the Chevy Trax has a familiar style but adopted changes to the front fascia with a draw with new headlights and a prominent grille.

2013 Chevrolet Trax to be released later this year and offered more than 140 countries. However, Chevy has no plans to offer the model in the United States.

The Trax is bound to share componentry and industrial underpinnings of the Vauxhall Mokka – putting it somewhere between the Nissan Juke and Qashqai in footprint – and is due in showrooms in spring 2013.

That would point to similar engines; the Mokka uses a 1.4 and 1.6 petrol, with the choice of a 1.7 turbodiesel. Most models in Europe would be front-wheel drive, but GM’s platform can serve up four-wheel drive to territories demanding better traction for slippery roads.

Cadillac LTS

After years, of patent leaks, spy shots, and endless rumors about its feasibility, the Cadillac LTS flagship sedan may finally become a reality. That’s the sentiment within the ranks at Cadillac after a high-level source told Autoblog that the RWD, flagship, luxury sedan is being developed in time to make its debut at the New York Auto Show in April 2015. That’s still a long ways away, so it should give Cadillac enough time to prepare its long-awaited answer to the likes of the Mercedes S-Class, the Audi A8, and the BMW 7 Series.

Autoblog is also reporting certain design elements of the Elmiraj Coupe Concept we saw at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance will make their way to the LTS sedan. That’s a great way to establish a luxury identity for the LTS, because the Elmiraj is everything we hoped a Cadillac flagship sedan would be. While we don’t expect the LTS to be identical to the Elmiraj, we’re looking forward to seeing what Cadillac has in store for the model.

If anything, the company needs to be on its A game in developing the LTS. Last we checked, the S-Class, A8, and 7 Series were all heavyweights of the luxury sedan market. The 2015 S-Class, in particular, was a dramatic improvement from its own predecessor, re-validating Mercedes’ place in the pecking order of the segment. Cadillac will definitely have a lot of pressure on its hands, although the Caddy source did tell Autoblog that the company is prepared to embrace the challenge.

At this point, we’re holding our judgment on that one, at least not until we see the LTS in the flesh in April 2015. You still have time on your hands, Cadillac. You better make the most out of it if the LTS wants to live up to the hype.

Volkswagen Golf R Cabrio Concept Revealed

Volkswagen Golf R Cabrio

What to do if you love the Volkswagen Golf R, but just can’t do without a drop-top car for summer? Get the Golf R Cabrio, of course!

Unfortunately, that might not be possible for Americans-the soft-top version of the Golf isn’t headed to the U.S. at all, so the R version is likely for European-only consumption, too.

If you’re not in the Cabrio fan club, you may be asking yourself, “What? Why?!” and that would be natural-except that Volkswagen recently took the wraps off the GTI Cabrio concept at this year’s W rthersee Tour. With the GTI Cabrio headed to production, it makes sense to drop in the hotter Golf R equipment and build it.

We can’t say we’re particularly jealous of this piece of forbidden fruit, but we know some of you will be. For now, all you can do is enjoy the images.

2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Released

2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen (now there’s a name that rolls trippingly off the tongue) is one of those over-the-top vehicles that you either don’t get at all – or embrace wholeheartedly for its utter ridiculousness. And the one we’re in, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG, has been fed a regimen of steroids.

Originally designed for military use, the iconic G-wagen’s 33-year legacy includes winning the 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally, the world’s most gruelling off-road endurance race.

As far as hardcore off-roaders go, the G-Class is considered one of the best – a nearly indestructible bushwhacker instantly recognizable for its boxy upright shape. Yet it’s rather unlikely that most will ever venture far from the pavement – the G-wagen being a niche favourite of the entitled set who probably has little interest in its formidable prowess, but plenty in its bragging rights.

And that recent cachet is a good thing – the death knell having come very close to sounding for the boxy ute more than once. Currently experiencing a surge in popularity with a double-digit growth in sales last year, the G-wagen returns with a modicum of enhanced style, yet the image that made it an icon remains relatively intact.

Our beast, the G 63 AMG, boasts a twin-turbo, 5.5L V8 that puts out 544 bellowing horsepower with 560 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 7G-tronic automatic transmission, the G 63 has an official combined fuel rating of 13.0L/100km.

It also features a start/stop function while in C mode (for controlled efficiency). Switching the shift lever to Sport or Manual cancels the start/stop function, shortening the shifts and speeding up throttle response.

Its butch appearance boasts a little added bling with an LED strip under its distinctive round headlights and red callipers peeping through the spokes of its 20 rims. It’s dressed in gunmetal grey, with that sexy matte finish that’s been appearing throughout the brand’s lineup. The front end is treated to an AMG makeover, with the characteristic chrome-trimmed, twin-blade grille, and an aggressive bumper with large air inlets.

Hardcore on the outside, the cabin treatment is pure, upscale Designo – because every off-roader needs quilted, butter yellow upholstery, right? It’s complimented by carbon fibre trim and an enamel white centre stack. Despite its retro exterior, the G 63 boasts all the latest gadgetry: Mercedes-Benz’s COMAND multimedia interface, large touchscreen, blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control, just to name a few.

With three electronically-controlled locking differentials, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class chugs effortlessly up the 45-degree inclines to the 3-storey summit of the rickety steel track like some chunky automotive version of the Terminator. Ludicrous, yet delightfully compelling, we’re still giggling about it later when we set out to conquer the Alps.

2013 Lexus RX270

2013 Lexus RX270

The Lexus RX SUV range will expand to a third model in June, with a new four-cylinder petrol model giving the Japanese luxury brand a new lower price point to compete with the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

The new Lexus RX270 has yet to be officially confirmed, but CarAdvice sources say the model will follow the trend for SUVs that offer improved fuel efficiency by being two-wheel drive rather than all-wheel drive.

The Lexus RX is traditionally a rival for the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz, but the new base model could potentially be priced below $70,000 to give Lexus Australia a competitor against the Q5 and X3 while it continues its long wait for Japan to deliver a much-needed baby SUV.

The current Lexus RX range starts at $82,814 for the RX350 that’s powered by a 204kW 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine. It’s joined by the RX450h petrol-electric hybrid, which starts at $89,788 and has a combined power output of 220kW.

Lexus’s front-wheel-drive RX270 features a 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine that produces about 138kW of power (at 5800rpm) and 252Nm of torque (at 4200rpm).

Fuel consumption for the RX270 will be about 9.5 litres per 100km, according to overseas specifications, with emissions of 222 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

The figure makes the RX270 cleaner and more efficient than the RX350 with 10.8L/100km and 254g/km, though the hybrid RX450h remains the leader in this area with 6.3L/100km and 149g/km.

The absence of a four-wheel-drive system helps reduce the RX270’s weight by about 135kg over the RX350. The RX350, however, features a system that employs the front wheels only in normal driving before apportioning up to 50 per cent of torque to the rear wheels to deal with surfaces with reduced grip.

Lexus will also add F Sport variants to the revised Lexus RX range. The sportier-looking and more dynamically focused models have proved popular in other Lexus vehicles such as the CT200h hatch, IS medium sedan and GS large sedan.

The facelift for the third-generation Lexus RX range was shown at March’s 2012 Geneva motor show. The updated RX brings upgrades to the interior and exterior, with the latter including the brand’s new ‘spindle’ family face.

Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat has a long and storied history that dates back to the automaker’s decision to release the Dasher in the U.S. in 1974. Save for the change of name, some safety add-ons and emission-reducing components, the Dasher was essentially the same as the rest of the world’s Passat. The Quantum replaced the Dasher in 1982, then the Passat finally arrived in the U.S. in 1990.

Heading toward 2015, the highly anticipated, eighth-generation – sixth generation in the U.S. – Volkswagen Passat, which rides on the new MQB platform, has been already launched in Europe, although it won’t reach the U.S. market until 2016. Redesigned inside and out, the new Passat was dressed in a more stylish suit and fitted with a host of brand-new convenience and safety features.

Much like the previous iteration, the 2015 Passat becomes available with a bevy of gasoline and diesel engines. For the very first time, the mid-size vehicle has gained a plug-in hybrid version powered by a gas unit and an electric motor combo. Naturally, the redesigned Passat will endure a few changes before it reaches North American shores, but the Euro-spec model is a very good preview of what we’ll be getting in showrooms for the 2016 model year.

Spy Shots: 2017 Mercedes E-Class Mule Caught Testing

It’s been only a month since the first report about the next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class surfaced the Interwebz, and it appears the Germans have already began working on the redesigned sedan. The big news comes via our spy photographers stationed in Germany, who have spotted a strange-looking mule near the Nurburgring track.

We say “strange-looking” because the vehicle depicted in the images we just received in our inbox is a half-camouflaged C-Class that’s not exactly the compact sedan we’re already familiar with. It might look like a regular C-Class at first glance, but a closer inspection reveals the body is longer and wider than it should be. What’s more, the engine is stuffed under a longer hood and the wheel arches hidden under the swirly wrap are slightly beefier.

This leads us to believe we’re actually looking at the next-generation E-Class, which we expect to arrive for the 2017 model year. Although it’s at least two years away, we’re not at all surprised to see it on public streets already. The sedan is in for a brand-new platform and a host of new technologies, all of which require months, if not years, of development and testing.

Chevrolet Colorado

The Cherolet Colorado debuted in 2004 as the replacement to Chevy’s first-ever, American-built compact pickup: the S-10 (the LUV that predated the S-10 was an Isuzu product). The Colorado continued with only minor changes through the 2012 model year when it was abruptly discontinued. Little did we know at that time, this was more of a break than a discontinuation of the model, as the covers were pulled off the totally redesigned 2015 Chevy Colorado at the 2013 LA Auto show joining the still fresh Silverado and Silverado HD. The Colorado is based on the global truck platform, but is highly ‘Americanized’ with many key components swapped out for heavier-duty items based on the new Silverado.

The Colorado rides on a fully-boxed, hydroformed steel frame giving it a sturdy platform for hauling and towing. Initially the Colorado will come with two gasoline engine options with a diesel debuting the following year. This diesel engine shows just how serious Chevy is in making the new midsize pickup a class-leader. We suspect that other automakers will soon follow suit and offer diesels in their midsize pickups.

Updated 06/18/2014: Chevrolet announced specifications for the 2015 Colorado which will go on sale this fall. With output starting from 200 horsepower, the new Colorado will be the most powerful in the midsized truck segment. Full details after the jump.

Nissan Pulsar

Only one year has passed since Nissan revived its Datsun brand by introducing the GO hatchback, and the Japanese manufacturer has just confirmed its return to the compact car segment (C-segment in Europe) with a brand-new vehicle.

Dubbed Pulsar, a name previously used for a line of compact cars sold in Asia and Australia since 1978 (not to be confused with the Pulsar NX sports car marketed in the U.S. between 1983 and 1990), the new vehicle is a five-door hatchback aimed at models such as the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus.

Nissan’s recipe for the Pulsar is pretty much simple and includes an instantly recognizable design with styling cues borrowed from the Qashqai, small, turbocharged engine that deliver decent power and return attractive fuel economy, and a price tag that’s likely to put the hatchback below most of its competitors.

A big bet for the Japanese automaker in Europe, the Pulsar is basically insignificant to the U.S. market, with Nissan having no plans to ship it across the ocean. This might very well change depending on vehicle’s success in Europe, but we’re at least a couple of years away from a pertinent verdict. Either way, the Pulsar is a hatchback worth looking at, and that’s what we’re about to do after the jump.

BMW Performance Division's Boss Says That the New M1 will get i8 Technology, if Green Lighted

bmw m1 hommage

The M1 is one of the most iconic cars ever produced by BMW, and it was the model responsible for the M Division that creates all the cars we love today, like the M5 and the venerable M3.

Fans of the Roundel brand have been clamoring for BMW to revive this epic nameplate and take on competitors like the Audi R8 and Mercedes SLS AMG for years now, but there has been little movement.

Rather, what we got was a new hybrid car that looks like an M1 called the i8. While the i8 is an incredible piece of engineering, it is not a fire-breathing M car. But what if it could be?

At the recent launch of the M3 and M4, CarAdvice asked M Division boss Friedrich Nitschke about the potential for this new car to spawn an M car. His response is encouraging.

When it comes to moving the advanced powertrain and lightweight carbon-fiber technology over to an M car, Nitschke said its a matter “capacity not a question of know-how.” Basically, it would not be hard to move anything over, they just need approval from the higher ups in BMW. As it stands, the M Division is ready to make one, if the BMW board will green light the project.

Would you guys like to see a revived M1 in all its mid-engined glory?

The Next Audi S3 creates great competition to BMW M135i

audi a3 tdi

BMW’s latest M135i hatchback is about to get some hot competition with the upcoming release of the Audi S3.

Audi’s newest edition to the S models is reported to be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 5-cylinder engine, and is rumored to produce 276-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. This will the replacement for the last S3’s ten-year old ‘EA113’ motor, and will be the first model to be powered by the updated ‘EA888’ engine. It will feature a freshly engineered turbo, Audi Valve Lift system to improve low-end response, and an estimated improvement of 15 hp and 22 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to the added power, the S3 will get larger by 22mm in length, 201 mm in width and 21mm in height. Still, the car will weigh roughly 176 lbs. less than its predecessor’s weight with the use of aluminum for select parts.

Reports suggest that the 2.0l-liter five-cylinder will be mated to a standard six-speed manual gearbox, with a seven-speed transmission dubbed DQ500 as an option.

Audi is anticipating a 0-62mph time of 5.5 seconds, which shaves 0.2 seconds off the previous generation’s time. Top speeds will be governed at 155mph.

The New 2013 Honda Accord Sedan

2013 Honda Accord Sedan

While many think the Honda Accord has lost its way since the 1990s, the car continues to sell very well, finding a sweet spot of style, performance, and function for many drivers. The 2013 model looks to update the car with a fresher, more dramatic take on the Accord’s proportions and theme.

Previewed by the Accord Coupe Concept at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the new car looks rather similar to the current Accord, but at the same time, blends its elements more harmoniously, presenting a more refined, modern look.

The spy shots show a car that’s still heavily clad in camouflage, however, keeping the changes from the Accord Coupe Concept to the production sedan from our view. Given Honda’s affinity for showing barely-disguised production models as concepts, however, we have every reason to think that what’s under the covers will closely resemble the Detroit concept.

Information on what sort of interior design changes, technology upgrades, or powertrain improvements might be in order remains closely held, however.

The 2013 Honda Accord is expected to arrive in dealer lots later this year, with the sedan preceding the coupe by several months to a year.

2014 Lexus GS Coupe to Arrive Next Year?

new lexus gs

Lexus is said to be working on a new sports touring coupe to fill the spot that was left by the old SC 430. Dubbed the 2014 Lexus GS 350 coupe, the new model is expected to hit the showrooms some time next year.According to a recent report by Inside Line in the US, Lexus has all but confirmed that such a model will exist. The publication says that various sources have indicated that Lexus needs a new sports coupe.

Karl Schlicht, head of global product planning for Lexus, said in an Automotive News report earlier this year that Lexus needs a sporty coupe to sit beside the range of new sedans and crossovers that have recently been launched.

Introducing a GS coupe would certainly fit into the market well. At the moment Lexus doesn’t offer a direct rival for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, Audi A5, and BMW 6 Series, however, the GS sedan platform is firmly targeted at the sedan versions of these cars.

As for the power, being a performance-oriented sedan, the current 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 in the GS 350 (review here) and GS 450h is expected to be swapped for a more serious unit, possibly coinciding with an introduction of a ‘GS-F’ badge. Maybe the IS-F’s 5.0-litre V8?

Either way, the new model isn’t expected to show up until at least 2013, possibly debuting in concept form at a major international motor show.

The 2013 Buick Enclave

2013 Buick Enclave

The Buick Enclave is making a comeback in 2013 with a revamped model of the previous 2008 version of it. The Enclave had first appeared in the market back in May 2008, and 2013 will witness a better and much more advanced version of the same Buick Enclave, just as the Traverse is going to debut in 2013 with a new model. The 2013 Enclave has a lot more to offer than the 2008 version. From the technical aspects to the appearance, this edition is surely going to have the critics working hard.

The mechanical and technical details are not very different from the earlier model. It is the appearance that has been hugely updated and is expected to set hearts soaring. The vehicle still features a 3.6 liters, 288hp and V-6 engine. There has been a slight modification with the six speed automatic transmission. The suspensions have also been modified with front and rear dampers. EPA fuel economy has been retained at 16/22 mpg and 17/24 mpg for all-wheel and front-wheel vehicles respectively. Hence, the overall mechanical aspects are similar to the outgoing version of the Buick Enclave 2008.

However, as far as looks are concerned, there have been a whole lot of additions and modifications to give it a fuller and better appearance. With the addition of HID headlamps and LED running lights, the car is a winner when it comes to illumination. The headlights are now accentuated with blue accent rings and available swivel action. Modifications have also been made to the grilles, hoods, fascia and wheels, but those are pretty minimal and not noteworthy by any chance. Under the hood, there have been a whole lot of modifications as well, with the restyled dashboard center stack and the greatest addition being the huge 7 inches full touch infotainment system. Supported by Buick’s Intellilink interface, the infotainment system is really striking, with smartphone integration, Pandora Stitcher apps control and a backup camera as well. The ambient blue lighting inside also adds to the appeal of the car in the dark. Addition of airbags has also increased the level of safety.

If you are looking for a great vehicle which can provide you with nothing but sheer luxury and grandeur, the Buick Enclave is not the perfect car for you. It is more about comfort and performance, beautification and style. Compared to the 2008 version of Enclave, this one is brilliant in terms of appearance only, while the performance is almost the same for both the versions.

Honda preparing a new Civic Type-R for 2013

honda civic type r 2013

The regular Civic hatch went on sale in 2011, and the company has built go-faster Type-R hot hatch versions for the past two generations.

This is the first evidence that a new one is in the pipeline. CAR’s sources suggest we’ll see the new Civic Type-R in 2013.

No, we wouldn’t expect to see a whopping great big rear spoiler on the back of the Type-R either. It’s likely that the engineers are playing with the aero package ahead of deciding on the roadgoing car’s design.

Although Honda has shied away from performance derivatives in recent years, company top brass has pledged to return Honda to its sporting roots.

Hence the NSX concept car shown at the 2012 Detroit auto show. And we hear more Type-R sports derivatives are coming to add some zing to a brand whose allure has become slightly dulled in recent years.

Honda is busy rolling out a new family of engines, one of which will likely power the 2013 Civic Type-R. Under the catch-all banner of Earth Dreams Technology (how Honda is that?), the company has pledged to lower CO2 emissions by 30% by 2020.

That’ll be achieved through a mix of engine tech, downsizing, hybrids and pure electric vehicles. We expect, however, that the new Civic Type-R will stick with a more conventional VTEC engine, rather than use an NSX-alike hybrid solution.

What with the new Focus ST, VW Golf GTI and Vauxhall Astra VXR looming, it seems that we may be about to repeat the 1980s all over again – with a batch of fun hot hatches to add interest to humdrum mainstream cars.

2014 Cadillac ATS-V First Look

2014 Cadillac ATS-V images

Big power, little package. That’s what the industry is touting for the 2014 Cadillac ATS-V compact luxury performance sedan. Despite the success of the big brother CTS-V supercharged V8 sourced from the Corvette ZR1 program, industry rumors are spreading of a new twin-turbocharged V6 pushing roughly 400 horses under the right foot of early adopters – although we think that number is conservative now that the 3.6L DI V6 option was confirmed at 318hp for the standard ATS.

Based on the GM ‘Alpha’ platform, the ATS will be a familiar front-engine/rear-drive design, with an AWD option. Manual and automatic transmissions are offered in the plain-jane ATS, and we’re guessing the ATS-V will follow the CTS-V with a proper driver’s gearbox. It is unlikely that Cadillac will have an AWD system capable of handling the V’s power in time, but don’t count it out entirely. After all, GM has shipped plenty of vehicles with tire-melting power and marshmallow rear ends through the years.

The clear target is the BMW M3 which weighs about the same and outputs 420hp from its high-revving V8. The ATS-V has the opportunity to utilize its rumored turbochargers for more torque at a lower peak RPM and carry it longer than the Bavarian competition. The result would be a substantial seat-of-the-pants improvement and should put the 0-60 acceleration in the mid-4s.

According to online sources, Cadillac considered adding a station wagon and convertible to the ATS range. However, for the time being, those plans appear to have been put on ice. Luckily, the ATS Coupe is still on track, and we expect the production version to appear later this year at the L.A. Auto Show, or early next year in Detroit. An ATS-V Coupe powered by a turbocharged V-6, delivering somewhere in the region of 400 to 450 bhp (latest rumor puts it 470hp), is also likely and could be revealed at the same time. But let’s not rule out a small-displacement V8 with forced induction just yet.

If the new ATS-V can combine good power with a proven suspension, like the magneto-rheological system found on the CTS-V, all for around $55,000, it could be a huge success. For comparison (USD): the M3 starts at $60,000; the C63 at $58,930; IS F $61,300.

No word yet on a release schedule, but expect the 2014 ATS-V to hit showrooms late 2013 or early 2014.

Report: Next-Gen Mustang will Start as a Limited-Run 2014 1/2 Model

If you dig deep into the Mustang’s history and pull up the first generation, you will find that it was actually a mid-model-year addition to Ford’s lineup, which makes it a 1964 1/2 model year. Back then, half-model-year vehicles were not a too rare, like they are today, but it looks as if we are set to see one really soon in the next-gen Mustang.

According to an insider that spoke to the folks over at Mustangs Daily, there will be a limited run of next-generation Mustang’s bearing the 2014 1/2 model year. The insider claims that this is a way for Ford to celebrate the true 50th anniversary of the famed pony car.

According to the report, only 1,000 examples if the 2014 1/2 Mustangs will see production and they will each feature a special VIN and build number to separate them from the 2015 models. With only 1,000 units hitting showrooms at what we assume will be a rather inflated price, this special run of next-gen Mustangs will be an instant collector’s item.

The report also indicates that, despite an anticipated price hike, the 2014 1/2 model will not feature any power upgrades.

If this report proves to be true, then we are likely getting rather close to seeing Ford drop the camo from the Mustang in time to squeeze in for 2014. Stay tuned for more details!

2012 Ford Focus 1.6 Ecoboost Zetac S

2012 Ford Focus 1.6 Ecoboost Zetac S

I do like a Ford Focus. And I do spend a deal of time in the boozer explaining to those who get enough practice to hit the bullseye of a soap-on-mirror target with a freshly squeezed blackhead every single time that they really should spare themselves the price of a knackered old BMW with a sewing machine under the bonnet and consider the Blue Oval alternative.

Which made my recent drive in the new Ford Focus 1.6 Ecoboost Zetec S all the more pertinent.
Why the Ford Focus is the perfect first car

Specifically, I tend to punt an original Mk1 Ford Focus at younger motorists; the car Ford spent so much money developing it nearly knackered the company.

Never works, of course… The only downside to this job is that the man who sidles up to discuss his choice of next motorcar has already made his mind up. He doesn’t want an argument, he simply wants affirmation. Well, he won’t get it from me. Not if the object of his desire is a BMW with an exhaust pipe the diameter of a MacDonald’s milk shake straw he won’t.

A recent hoon in a Zetec S spec third-generation Ford Focus has done much to reaffirm my position… With, however, one or two reservations…
Ford Focus (2012): is it a looker?

Ever since his Audi days, I’ve always been a big Martin Smith (or, given the maw of the impending Mondeo, should that be Aston Martin Smith?) fan. But I can’t help feeling that every successive generation of Focus is just a whisker less easy on the eye than that first, svelte masterpiece.

There’s a whiff of Eastern market-appeasing bling creeping into both exterior and interior styling of 2012′s Focus, and I’m slightly at a loss to explain a radiator grille which appears to blank off a disconcertingly large percentage of its surface area; I don’t see why what works for the VW Up can’t work for a Focus…
Inside the 2012 Ford Focus

Moreover, though I enjoy the deep-frozen kingfisher bill dial needles of the instrument binnacle, I’m not crazy about the cheap imitation of a Vuvuzela Spice (plastic and annoying) Vertu telephone that is the centre console styling, nor the fact that the instrument binnacle and centre console multi-information/infotainment screens don’t actually match. A bizarre oddity, since they do, perfectly, in the new C-Max…

This also constitutes the first Focus in which I’ve felt the need to reach for the instruction manual… Over and above the gently counter-intuitive switchgear appendant to the centre console screen itself, there are two identical steering wheel-mounted switches – both sport a central ‘OK’ button surrounded by a quadrant of arrows – for the purposes of navigating your way through the endless menus in this car… Then there’s another raft altogether for controlling the stereo.
Do we want all these gadgets?

I know hatchback buyers all want rafts of premium toys these days (well, I actually only know that because that’s what the manufacturers tell me the thoroughly clinic’ed punters want, and I can just hear the key question now: ‘Would you like, a) loads of trick driver assistance and safety systems, b) nothing, c) a smack in the face with a week-old mackerel?’), but must the cost of operating them be a swift punt up the luggage for the car in front?

Granted, buyers will learn to live with, if not exactly love, these control systems, but I wonder how they’ll fare with a couple of other elements which smack of the increasing bent towards design dictatorship…

From an ergonomic perspective, the centre console box/armrest is little short of infuriating. It’s an increasingly prevalent detail in many cars of this ilk and, in a manual, just plain crazy; car dictating gearchange style to driver rather than vice versa, simply because you can’t drop your elbow to the height you’d prefer. I know we need boxes to house our mobile connectivity devices, but really…

This is a continuation of the ergonomic bullying that spawned steering wheels covered in divots, making it possible to hold it comfortably only at quarter to three. Those of us taught to drive with hands at ten to two continue to be unamused…

2013 Audi SQ5

2013 Audi SQ5 images

America’s relationship with diesel-powered vehicles began with pick-up trucks, then we had a brief affair with passenger vehicles, but that was doomed to failure. Diesel passenger cars became somewhat of a cult favorite for some wealthy Americans from Germany. They may be disappointed though because Audi officials have yet to announce whether the new SQ5 Diesel will come to the US. The SQ5 is the first S Model in Audi history to have a diesel-powered motor. Concurrent with the 24 Hour Le Mans, Audi presented the newest model in their newly revised Q5 series, the SQ5. With its two turbochargers and a 313 horsepower engine with 479 lb.-ft. of torque, it may be shipped to Canada, but speculation says it may not arrive in the US. It will surely be missed if it never makes its way to the United States.

The Audi Q5 has enjoyed popularity among urban dwellers and those seeking to lower their carbon footprint. However its cousin, the new SQ5 is poised to take away the market share from the traditional leader of the mid-sized luxury SUV sector, the Lexus RX350, at least in other parts of the world.

The new Audi 2013 SQ5, takes an impressively powered SUV and adds even more torque. The Lexus RX350 and Infiniti JX hardly compare with the 2013 Audi SQ5 diesel, either in fuel efficiency or with its commanding 479 lb.-ft. of torque. Each with only 248 lb.-ft. of torque, both the Infiniti JX and the Lexus RX350 are officially beaten.

The new Audi SQ5 will easily pull large trailers and boats up steep grades that the owners of an RX350 or JX can only climb in their dreams. With nearly double the torque, the Audi SQ5 has the definite advantage and can now compete with the likes of Mercedes and BMW.

A high performance diesel that hits sixty in about five seconds, the 2013 Audi SQ5 is quite impressive, with a 313 horsepower motor mated to an 8-speed transmission. Since all diesels shift at low RPMs they have relatively flat torque curves. With a high number of gears, these motors will behave almost like they’re paired with a constantly variable transmission, just like the Infiniti JX. This gives Audi the best of both worlds.

The only other advantage of a luxury diesel sport utility vehicle other than torque, is fuel economy. The new Audi was tested on European tracks and averaged in the low 30 MPG range. This even challenges its rival, the Infiniti RX hybrid’s efficiency, and very well may beat any gas-powered vehicle in the same sector of the market. The increase in miles per gallon gives the SQ5 more range, always a plus in a sport utility vehicle, and makes it a great vehicle for vacation travel.

With better fuel economy than an Infiniti RX hybrid, and tremendous towing capacity for Americans on the move, the introduction of the 2013 Audi SQ5 mated to the Q5, would give those shopping for an SUV a good reason to look twice at these vehicles, if they ever make it to the US.

Chrysler Pacifica Concept

Chrysler Pacifica

One of the original “crossover” vehicles is the Chrysler Pacifica, which when compared to other similar vehicle types, could be regarded as being more upmarket, with the provision of a wide variety of driver and passenger comforts. These would be besides the highly established Chrysler Electronic Control unit (ECU). The Pacifica combined car and utility features and benefits, with four doors hinged at the front and seating positions for five or six passengers. A buyer has the option of a front wheel, or all-wheels drive.

In the 2004 model, the Chrysler Pacifica was marketed in a base design, with limited levels of trim offered. Although it had less features, it was relatively well equipped and priced competitively. Initially, the model was powered by a 3.8 liter V 6, generating 210 horsepower and 240 pounds of torque. This combination did not receive positive reviews, particularly regarding the all-wheels drive models, when loaded to capacity. The 2005 Pacifica had a reliable ECU helping to provide added economy and a 3.5 liter V 6, with 250 horsepower, as standard. This was with the exception of the basic front wheel drive model.

As with any other motor manufacturer, Chrysler has continuously sought innovative improvements to their vehicles, which provide the edge in a highly competitive market. This has been shown by their recognized and highly regarded ECU, which forms an integral part of safe, economic driving. This form of control unit has the capability of removing some responsibility from the driver, regarding general vehicle performance in varied and especially adverse conditions. In all aspects of economy and vehicle maintenance, the control unit has proven to be a cost effective motoring asset.

In 2007, the 3.8 liter engine, which had been discarded for the 2006 model, returned to the Pacifica, but only in the basic front-wheel drive model. However, it now had a rating of 200 horsepower. A 4.0 liter, V 6, was fitted in the other models, instead of the 3.5 V 6. With the new six speed automatic transmission, the ECU ensured an efficient and economic driving performance. The basic engine retained the original four speed transmission.

Chrysler has helped transform the world and style of motoring with their electronic control systems. The continual rising costs of fuel and vehicle maintenance have encouraged motorists to review cost effective options when buying a car. The automatic controls provided for engine, transmission and many other aspects related to comfortable and safe driving, is far removed from days of the hands-on mechanic of the past.
