Porsche shows off their 911 aerodynamic study from 1984 [video]
Had a drag coefficient of 0.27
In this week’s episode of Porsche 911 Secrets, the Porsche Museum’s Chief of Archive takes a look at a 1984 aerodynamic prototype which was ahead of its time.
As Dieter Landenberger explains, the model was equipped with a new front spoiler, covered wheels and a modified rear wing. These changes sound relatively minor but they enabled the car to have a drag coefficient of 0.27 which was significantly less than the standard 911’s drag coefficient of 0.40. To put these numbers into perspective, the BMW i8 has a drag coefficient 0.26 while the McLaren P1 registers 0.34.
While the prototype never went into production, a handful of the aerodynamic styling tweaks would later be used on road-going models.
