Project ‘still alive’
Audi’s Board Member of Technical Development Wolfgang Durheimer says a diesel-electric hybrid supercar program is “still alive”.
In other words, a model sitting on top of the R8 is planned to tackle the recently unveiled McLaren P1 and LaFerrari, as well as the upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder. Durheimer told AutoExpress such a car “deserves to be built” and he will be “fighting for this idea”.
If it will see the light of day, the range-topping Audi will probably be a LeMans-inspired diesel-electric hybrid developed using what they have learned from the R18 race program. Previous rumors have indicated an R20 moniker for a road-legal version of the R18.
Towards the end of last year, quattro GmbH Managing Director Franciscus Van Meel said to AutoExpress “If we make this car, it will be the absolute best supercar and completely different in concept to the R8.”
In related news, Wolfgang Durheimer said the next-gen TT could spawn an extremely lightweight version tipping the scales at around 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs). However, it seems this model has less chances of reaching production than the alleged R20.
