Toyota Corolla 2014 spy shots float around the web

Toyota Corolla 2014 spy shot

Revealing new photos of Toyota’s upcoming 2014 Corolla sedan have surfaced online this week, offering a first look at the new hatch’s four-door companion.

The images reveal that the new sedan will follow in the tyre treads of its predecessor, sharing styling similarities with the hatch while bringing its own unique look.

The new sedan adopts the same sharp new lines and tight angles worn by Toyota’s new Camry, Corolla hatch and RAV4, and a connection with the recent Furia concept can also be seen.

Details for the source of these spy photos are thin on the ground, and it remains unclear if this new Corolla will be sold globally or if it will be kept to certain markets.

The Furia concept was confirmed to preview a future small sedan for the US market, and with the styling similarities slight, it is possible the left-hand-drive sedan shown here is intended for Europe.

A replacement for the current Corolla sedan sold in Australia since 2007 has yet to be revealed, and it remains to be seen if this spied four-door is bound for our shores.

If this new sedan does make its way to Australia, expect it to draw power from the same 103kW/173Nm four-cylinder petrol engine that drives the new hatch model.

It is likely this new Corolla will appear at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. Keep an eye on TMR for more details as they come to light.

Debuts in Geneva next week

This is the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible as posted on Carfanatic’s Instagram account.

At the beginning of last month Chevrolet teased the convertible version of the Stingray, ahead of an official unveiling programmed for March 5 in Geneva. Now, we take a look at the open top Corvette while it’s being rolled down a ramp.

Too bad for the car cover as we don’t get to see the car’s details, but so far it looks good. We’ll just have to wait a couple of days until it will be revealed. The first car will be auctioned in April at Barrett-Jackson, with the money going to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Power is likely to come from the same 6.2-liter V8 engine with about 450 hp (336 kW) and 609 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque. It should be slightly slower than the coupe which can do 0-62 mph in less than four seconds.

2013 Audi A3 Sportback g-tron

1,300 km (807 miles) total range and 30 g/km CO2 emissions

Audi will showcase in Geneva next week the A3 Sportback g-tron together with the e-tron plug-in hybrid variant.

The g-tron has two gas tanks and a regular 1.4 TFSI engine producing 110 HP (81 kW) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque, enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 11 seconds and a top speed of 118 mph (190 km/h). The performances are the same whether it runs on gasoline or on gas.

Those tanks can carry up to 7 kg (15.3 lbs) of CNG at a max pressure of 200 bar and are installed under the boot floor. Audi says it has a fuel consumption of 3.5 kg / 100 km when running on gas and a range of 242 miles (400 km). These tanks are made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer and each tank weighs 27 kg (59.5 lbs) when full.

Using gasoline provides a range of 559 miles (900 km), while the total range stands at 807.7 miles (1,300 km). The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron benefits from an electronic gas pressure regulator which can reduce the high pressure of the gas flowing from the cylinders. During low-speed driving it enables a low-pressure gas, but when greater performance is required it allows for a high-pressure flow.

Full details are available in the attached press release.

Brabus B63S based on Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG heading to Geneva

Brabus B63S based on Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG

With 730 HP and 1,065 Nm

Brabus will showcase the B63S upgrade program for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG and Shooting Brake in Geneva next week.

Besides showing the SL 65 AMG-based 800 Roadster, Brabus will also present this modified CLS 63 AMG. Under the bonnet is the same V8 5.5-liter engine but it now outputs an impressive 730 HP (537 kW) and electronically-limited 1,065 Nm (785 lb-ft) whereas the 2014 CLS 63 AMG S-Model provides “only” 585 HP (430 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft).

Brabus installed two custom turbochargers with larger compressor units for generating a higher boost pressure compared to the stock turbos. They also fitted an extra low-temperature water-to-air intercooler and remapped the engine’s ECU. Free-flow metal catalysts with 75mm wide downpipes and a limited slip differential are also part of the package. The CLS 63 AMG and Shooting Brake also have a new sport stainless steel exhaust system with a butterfly valve and two ceramic-coated dual tailpipes.

Thanks to all these changes, the cars will do 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.8 seconds, making it 0.6s faster than the standard CLS 63 AMG (non S-Model) and 0.7s quicker than the Shooting Brake. The S-Model is still faster, performing the sprint in 3.6 seconds for the four-door coupe and 3.7 seconds for the Shooting Brake. The stock versions are electronically-limited to 155 mph (250 km/h), but the Brabus CLS 63 AMG will do 217 mph (350 km/h) while the Shooting Brake is limited at 186 mph (300 km/h) “out of consideration for the tires”.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission has been retained, and wind tunnel-developed carbon fiber front spoiler and fender attachments with backlit logo have been fitted to both cars. Brabus offers a wide variety of 19- and 20-inch wheels, scuff plates with backlit logo, 400 km/h (250 mph) speedometer, wood and carbon fiber trims, rear-seat tables attached to the font seats’ backs, as well as aluminum pedal pads, shift paddles and door lock pins.

The sixth-generation Corvette went into production in 2005 and since then a total of 215,100 units have been produced. Yesterday, February 28, 2013 at 8:04 a.m., the last 2013 Corvette came off the line at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. The last unit produced was an exclusive Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition outfitted with the 60th Anniversary design package that adds an Arctic White exterior combined with a Blue Diamond leather-wrapped interior.

This special edition is powered by a 7.0-liter LS7 aluminum-block V-8 engine that delivers a total of 505 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds and can hit a top speed of 190 mph.

This last unit will be displayed alongside other historic General Motors vehicles at the GM Heritage Center in Warren, Michigan.

Now that the sixth-generation Corvette is out of production, GM workers have begun remodeling the plant for the production of the all-new 2014 Stingray.

2014 MINI Cooper spy video

Goes on sale 12 months from now

The new generation of the MINI Cooper has been spied while conducting some winter testing.

Set for an official unveiling sometime this year, the next generation of the MINI is scheduled to go on sale in March 2014. The car is being developed on BMW’s UKL platform which will underpin 10-12 compact MINI and BMW front-wheel drive models.

Compared to current generation, the new MINI is expected to grow in size and be offered with several engines, including a three-cylinder, 1.5-liter producing 128 hp (96 kW) and 148 hp (110 kW) offered in gasoline and diesel versions. It will also borrow the four-cylinder, 2.0-liter mill from the BMW 1-Series.

The more potent Cooper S is likely to use a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 178 hp (132 kW) and 217 hp (162 kW) in the John Cooper Works (JCW) model. Rumors are indicating MINI is collaborating with PSA for a hybrid front-wheel variant.

Applus+ Idiada Volar-e revealed – based on Rimac Concept One [video]

The world’s most powerful electric vehicle

Following a preview earlier this month, Applus+ Idiada has officially unveiled their Volar-e prototype.

If you’re thinking the Volar-e looks familiar, that’s because it is essentially a Rimac Concept One with revised styling. Apparently, the Volar-e was created in four months using funds from the European Commission to become a “flagship for the promotion of electric vehicles in European society.” The procurement of a vehicle from Rimac would explain this super fast development time.

Described as the world’s most powerful electric sports car, the Volar-e has four electric motors that produce a combined maximum output of 1000 HP (735 kW) and 1000 Nm (737 lb-ft) of torque. This reportedly enables the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). When the 38 kWh battery is depleted, it can be fully replenished in just 15-20 minutes using a rapid charger.

The Volar-e features a carbon fiber body, a tubular chromoly chassis and carbon ceramic brakes. There is also an active chassis control system and a torque vectoring system that promises to improve the car’s handling.
