Based on a new modular platform
Volvo has revealed plans to launch a new coupe in the coming years.
During a private presentation held in Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo’s vice-president of research & development Peter Mertens showed a teaser photo of the new coupe but the media invited at the event was not allowed to take any photos.
The car will be based on a new modular platform which will underpin all of the firm’s models, starting with the XC90 scheduled to arrive next year. It will be followed by the S80 and the V70/XC70.
Volvo also plans a new range of 4-cylinder turbocharged engines with output varying from 140 hp (104 kW) to 280 hp (209 kW) for gasoline units and between 120 hp (89 kW) and 230 hp (171 kW) for diesels. A new hybrid powertrain is also in the pipeline.
Peter Mertens added Volvo will offer only three transmissions in the future: two manuals and an 8-speed automatic.
